Mike West & Myshkin

Sluggo’s, Pensacola, FL • January 7, 2000

“myshkin”

New Orleans folksters Mike West and Myshkin record as solo artists, but frequently perform as a duo. This show was no exception, as they shared the stage and took turn accompanying each other’s songs. Armed with acoustic guitars, banjo, mandolin, spoons, washboard, and a snare and cymbal, they sparkled through two sets. I was really only familiar with Myshkin from her Blue Gold album, although I knew both their names as players in the New Orleans music scene. Mike West, with his white trash stage persona and jubilant foot stomping songs, was tempered nicely by Myshkin and her quieter songs with politically charged lyrics. Their chemistry and unconditional love for their music shone brightly and made even unfamiliar songs come alive. The small audience was a healthy mix of fans and fans-to-be, so there was a fair amount of sing-a-long and a really nice, enthusiastic atmosphere. ◼
