Jennifer Goree & Appalachian Soul

Don’t Be a Stranger

NightShade

It is with great relief that I announce that Jennifer has not succumbed to the dreaded sophomore jinx. This CD, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed self-titled release of last year, is solid, gut-wrenching mountain soul of the highest caliber.

Again co-produced by Glenn Cannon, guitarist for Tony Tidwell & the Scalded Dogs, the sound quality on this CD is excellent. He has the knack for coaxing every drop of emotion from this Carolina songstress. Her band, aptly named Appalachian Soul, is a fine confluence of musicians, embracing each tune with soaring abandon.

Especially fine is the song “3rd Time Takes Its Toll.” It embodies the freshness of a mountain tune with the velvety soul of a Motown classic. Also worthy of special mention are “Sadieville,” with a mournful folky motif, and “Pauline,” a purely down-home confection with a sophistication rarely heard in this genre. Not only is this CD as good as her first, it is arguably better. Brava! NightShade Records, P.O. Box 163, Six Mile, SC 29682
