China is the hip country right now. Everything seems to revolve around China, from political scandals to Disney movies to music festivals, so it only stands to reason that Chinese music would hit the U.S. Singer Dadawa’s album Voices from the Sky is not what I usually expect from so-called world music. The music has not been bastardized by new age trappings. The songs are beautiful, with sparse arrangements that allow for Dadawa’s haunting voice to dominate. The Chinese lyrics are translated in the liner notes, but it hardly matters. Dadawa is able to make emotional contact with the listener even through a seemingly impenetrable language barrier. Voices from the Sky is a truly lovely record.
