Refining their modern marriage of Bauhaus and T-Rex even further, California’s the Audience offers a mighty tasty preview of their (hopefully) forthcoming album on SubPop. “Young Soul” begins with a spaghetti western-meets-gothic bassline (think Fields of the Nephilim) that anchors the rest of the song for rapid-fire splatterings of Daniel Ash-esque guitar histrionics and an ominous keyboard sound not unlike a trumpet – “god bless your young soul,” indeed. Offering up sultry, sexed-out lines like “let’s give the voyeurs something to look at,” “The Voyeurs” approximates Bolan’s guitar sound to a “T” (no pun intended) and twists it into a hook-laden glam-pop ditty that rests well, however oddly, next to the A-side. Once again, GSL delivers another gem.
