P.O.D.

The Warriors EP

Tooth & Nail

Like partners in chug and fellow labelmates Zao, Payable On Death (P.O.D.) views its hard-edged music as a ministry, one whose mission is to prove that Christians are just as angry as the atheists and are hell-bent (pun fully intended) on doing something about it – aurally, at least. And they actually do, guitars predictably but powerfully chugging away to funked-up stomps, vocalist Sonny rapping and raging against the machine all the while, the whole, angry mess succeeding in emphatically sounding more pissed off than an earth crisis. Such fare usually wallows in cliché, tin-can production, or general dimwittedness, but with tracks as evocative as “Breath Babylon,” P.O.D. makes a strong case for the fire ‘n’ brimstone strain of it – maybe that’s why the band just inked a deal with Atlantic… ah, probably not.
