On the scale of punk music from hardcore to pop punk, Pulley falls right in the middle, at a safe medium. I like @#!* for a few reasons, but at the same time, I wonder if maybe I shouldn’t like it because of those reasons. For example, Pulley is consistent in sound and style throughout the whole album. Unlike a lot of the newer bands who just can’t seem to decide what they want to sound like, Pulley’s songs are pulled together pat. The band definitely knows what they want to sound like, and they stick to it. Yet, I can’t help thinking that they remind me of other bands I’ve heard before, with the way the songs never stray from the safe middle ground of not being hardcore, heavy punk rock or catchy, pop punk. I don’t want to say that this album is mediocre, but there’s also really nothing new about the sound. Then, too, there’s the fact that Epitaph puts out the album, and you have to think: Which major labels aren’t putting out bands that all start to sound the same after a while?
