“betwixt”

Betwixt

The Salty Tang

Archenemy

To call something “art” is a great compliment, but to call something “artsy” is not. Betwixt is an “artsy” band. Their disc, which was recorded late in 1998, is chock full of artsy band trapping. Cellos, clarinets, pots and pans, steel guitars, ethereal female vocals, all have been employed to make a really pretentious record. The band’s musicianship is not what is in question. It’s just the fact that this project has had all of the life sucked out of it. It’s been terribly overthought and overworked. Similar kinds of line-ups have worked wonderfully. Betwixt, however doesn’t pull it off.
