The Leroi Brothers

Kings of the Catnap

Rounder

If you’re looking for a curve ball in your otherwise fastball life, then this Austin, TX quartet will slide (guitar) one right over the plate with their smooth rockabilly delivery. Whether you are groovin’ to the bluesy instrumental “The Flake” or the rootsy country feel of “Scratchin’ on Down the Line,” the Bros. have crafted a great record here. I found an intricate mix of flavors throughout the record that broke any specific type of genre label, which I consider a plus! I mean, they can rock it Texas style (“Devil Shake Woman”) or honky-tonk with “One More Last Chance,” a testament to the musical talent possessed by the Lerois.

Founding member and percussionist Mike Buck played with the Fabulous Thunderbirds, among others – Jimmie Ray Vaughn guest jams on “Route 88.” Steve Doerr and Casper Rawls contribute all of the original songs on the album, provide the slick pickin’ and versatile vocals, while Pat Collins keeps time pluckin’ the bass. And what is surely the Leroi Brothers’ coup de grace, the legendary Buck Owens himself has given Kings of the Catnap his seal of approval, and even provided some acoustic work on “The First Time.” Take it from me and Buck, Kings of the Catnap is a great record and refreshing change of pace.
