This could be the best alt-indie-country-rock I’ve heard in a long, long time. With some of the strange sounds coming out reminding me of Tom Waits or Black Heart Procession, the actual songs move into a more solid pop melodic structure. The vocals are very shifting, from drawling prairie songs to campfire heartbreak. Then there’s more indie-rock guitar straight-ahead type songs, going for that Elephant 6 feel, but more cohesive. If they ever made another Monkees movie, this would be great soundtrack music. It does get a bit silly at times, but between the experiments, there are solid songs that keep the CD moving through to the end.
