Topaz

The Zone

Velour

Tenor sax-playing Topaz and a handful of other musicians have married for a second time to produce what is too downtempo to be dance or funk, but is way too cool to be your parents’ jazz music either. It’s jazz fusion in a way that would make Steely Dan oh so proud. The third release on the new indie label Velour out of New York, and the second Topaz work (his first, Listen, was released last year) is proven to be worth a spin, especially for anyone who needs a slow, groovin’ CD with lots of neat lines and cavities of sound to get lost in. Worth every last cent of your trendoid, so cool I’m a dweeb money. Music appreciation 101 for MTV Generation jazz fans.
