Matt Lax + Nearly Beloved

Hurricane and a Tumbleweed

self-released

Lax uses a unique mix of American acoustic styles and South African guitar playing to create something that’s unique and engaging. Somehow the sound of the Soweto jangle – that peppy, funky plucking – doesn’t sound too out of place against a pedal steel. Lax’s band (Nearly Beloved, I assume) ably keeps up with Lax’s smooth voice and eccentric guitar playing, but seems to be keep its soul square in a country western box. On top of all is Lax’s off-kilter sense of humor – “we’re gonna swing, swing, swing until the rope breaks” declares a chorus. Overall it’s a quirky effect, but well done and backed up with solid songs and performances.
