Jim Wilson

My First Christmas With You

Hillsboro

Here’s some extremely dubious Christmas music for you all, an album to soundtrack every elevator ride you’ve ever experienced. Sappy even by regular Christmas music standards, Jim Wilson is an undeniably talented pianist who seems to do everything in his powers to avoid uniqueness and personality to come through in his music. Wilson runs through all your standard carols – “Silent Night,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “O Holy Night,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” – throws in a couple of “original” compositions, and two versions of Joni Mitchell’s “River” – but he could have played anything, really. It all sounds the same, it’s as smooth as silk, as lifeless as the album’s cover art.

If by chance you happen to own K-Mart, this is the album you’ve been looking for. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more real and meaningful, try something that doesn’t pretend we live in a perfect world, something that allows for doubt if only to make room for hope as well. And this isn’t it.
