Desperate Man
Probably raised on a diet of Hank Williams and Gram Parsons, Houston Marchman and the Contraband play outlaw country with passion and a nice dash of class. Desperate Man is the band’s third album (including the live set from last year), and it’s a fine and entertaining run through down-home Southern Americana and Tex-Mex flavored country music. The Roy Orbinson croon of “San Miguel” is a winner, although Marchman is at his best on the more up-tempo material, with “$2 Pistol” and “Satellite” providing particularly entertaining moments. If unpolished Nashville country is your kind of thing, and you’ve already been browsing Steve Earle’s back-catalogue, then check out these guys.
