This is amazing. Yeah, this is funny. It’s the political version of

“Know what? That was a joke.”

“Know what? It wasn’t.”

That thing too many of us do where we tell a truth that exposes just a little bit too raw of a nerve, and dash away from it as smoothly as we can–“Just kidding, jeez, lighten up already!” In this context, it’s called signalling to your core voters while still being able to maintain deniability, however implausible. It’s like how during the civil rights moment politicians used the words “states rights” to mean “Segragation now, segregation tomorrow…”

I wouldn’t be gay in Florida for a million dollars.
