The Sound of the Crowd

I hate this movie, people

I’ve been wondering why the commercials, endless product tie-ins and “synergy” around “Dr. Seuss’” The Cat in the Hat fills me with such hatred. After all, it’s not like it’s the first disgusting, witless movie to bitchslap it’s source material. But I think I figured out what it is. The real Cat in the Hat (meaning the book) was written for the specific purpose of teaching children to read. Forgive what sounds like a promotional cliche of it’s own, but it showed kids that reading could be fun, in a world that was then dominated by monotonous Dick and Jane-style readers. That is one of the most noble aims a book could have, and that Seuss (aka Ted Geisel) succeded is inarguable. The movie just wants children’s time and money. Especially their money.
