Molly Ivins & Garry Trudeau
I’ve just come from an evening hearing these people, both heroes of mine, speak together. Ivins of course is the syndicated columnist and author, Trudeau is the Pultitzer Prize-winning creator of the Doonesbury cartoon. Doonesbury fans, heads up–Trudeau announced from the stage what’s going to happen in the next week or so of strips, which I won’t spoil, but it involves a major life change for one of his core characters.
It was a very enjoyable evening, as you’d expect from two such smart, funny people. Topics touched on included one of Karl Rove’s rare missteps–sending John “lost an election to a dead man” Ashcroft on a “charm offensive,” and the ever-shfting rationale for our presence in Iraq. Then there was the likelyhood that George W. Bush–as a Deke pledge, class of ‘68–has a small brand on his buttocks.
More seriously, Ivins spoke to the queasy feeling liberals are getting as they realize they have something to gain from bad news in Iraq. I’ll probably think of more things they said as I comment on events in days to come, but I wanted to get this entry down now.
