The Sound of the Crowd

One For My Baby

People from the paranoid conspiracy theorists to the mainstream media are starting to fear potential October/November “surprises” coming from the Bush administration.

The first half of this long but worthy Mother Jones piece sets all these out. Not to put to fine a point on it, it’s depressing; it makes me want Rachel and Phoebe to press their breasts against me*.

The second half, though, is more shakily hopeful, as it points out that expecting the Bush administration to pull off any of these scenarios requires beliving that they are some kind of Ian-McKellen-in-X-Men calliber super-villians.

Which just doesn’t seem to jibe with the facts.

And one more for the road: The above also links to an equally lengthy but also good piece by Ron Reagan making “The Case Against George W. Bush,” which will appear in this month’s Esquire.

Joey: (on phone) Hello? (Listens) Oh hey! Can you, can you hang on a second? (To Phoebe and Rachel) It’s the producers over at Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E. can you excuse me for a minute? (On phone) Hey, funny you should call. I was just looking over next week’s script. (Listens) Canceled?! (Listens) Like they’re taking it off the air? (Listens) Ohh. (Listens) All right, see you Monday. (Listens) We’re not even shootin’ them anymore?!! (Listens) All right, bye! (Hangs up) They canceled Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E!

Phoebe: Sorry.

Rachel: I’m sorry Joey.

Joey: Why would they do that?! It was a good show right?!

(Phoebe and Rachel both pause, look at each other, and go press their breasts against him.)
