not a mary cheney post
It’s really not; it’s about the media and their bait-and-switch, cups and balls game again. According to a poll shown in the Washington Post, a majority of Americans disapprove of the reference to Cheney’s daughter. I’m not going to get into that. But check out the leading paragraphs (words in bold emphasis mine:
“An overwhelming majority of voters believe it was wrong for Democratic nominee John F. Kerry to have mentioned in Wednesday’s presidential debate that Vice President Cheney’s daughter was a lesbian, according to the latest Washington Post tracking survey.
Nearly two in three likely voters – 64 percent – said Kerry’s comment was “inappropriate,” including more than four in 10 of his own supporters and half of all swing voters.”
My thing is, I think there’s a big difference between something that is “wrong,” and something that is “inappropriate.” I mean just being nerdy and going by the dictionary definition, to be wrong is to be:
“Not in conformity with fact or truth; incorrect or erroneous, contrary to conscience, morality, or law; immoral or wicked.”
Whereas to be inappropriate is to be “Unsuitable or improper.”
If they had called me for this poll…which they never, ever do, darn it…I would have agreed that the comment was inappropriate (or at least, inappropriately made). But it falls far short of being wrong, particuarly in this context.
This is a Presidental campaign, a race to determine who is going to be “the most powerful man in the world.” Shouldn’t we save words like “wrong” for things like GIs being killed in a war to which they were sent under false pretenses?
Or am I wrong? Or just inappropriate?
