Midlake

Bamnan and Slivercork

Bella Union

Midlake’s dreamy, hypnotic indie rock should make for an interesting listen, but Bamnan and Slivercork is actually extremely dull. “They Cannot Let It Expand” rides on the crest of a repetitive melody and is about as agitated as the band gets. The weird, experimental instrumental “The Reprimand” and the depressing and strangely titled “Kingfish Pies” are simply bewildering, while trawling through “Moppers Melody” and “The Jungler” quickly becomes tedious.

As an example of musical self-expression and individuality, Bamnan and Slivercork will probably appeal to some. But it’s not an album to savor and return to. They’d probably accuse me of not getting where Midlake are coming from, but this is one for the purists only, I think.
