The Sound of the Crowd

This is why everybody in the world hates us

AP Wire story reporting that even in hypocritical America, people are starting to question the wisdom of spending tens of millions of dollars for the Inauguration. Especially when our soldiers don’t have enough or adequate armor and there’s 22 million children alone in regions devastated by the tsunami.

It quotes my Congressman, “Bagdad” Jim McDermott, on the issue thus:

“President Roosevelt held his 1945 inaugural at the White House, making a short speech and serving guests cold chicken salad and plain pound cake,” according to a letter from…Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash. “During World War I, President Wilson did not have any parties at his 1917 inaugural, saying that such festivities would be undignified.”

Man…Fred Allen and Bob Hope on the radio, a great President in the White House…people in 1945 had it nice.
