I’m still a fan
…of “Boston Legal,” but TV Critic Joanne Ostrow was right when she said in the Denver Post that the series needs to find a better balance between its comedic and serious drama moments.
I disagree with most of the rest of her review. Most of the things she says, disbelievingly, “are supposed to be funny” in the series are, in fact laugh-out-loud funny. At least to me, and that’s what we’re concerned with here. Including if not especially seeing William Shatner send-up both his self-important reputation and the “loose cannon” image of his most famous character.
I also thought Candace Bergen got off to a nice start as a new series regular in tonights episode. In the show’s opening moments, she walks into a men’s room unannounced, sizes up James Spader, and delivers an accurate diagnosis of his character.
So yeah, the show could be better, but it’s still plenty good enough to keep me hooked. Besides, where else am I going to see James T. Kirk have sexual tension with Murphy Brown?
