“A generation ago, being in favor of equal rights for blacks and other minorities was a huge political loser. We had a choice back then – we could have gone the way of the Klan (and the Southern Democrats who became Republicans) and win elections, or we could stand up for equal rights for all Americans. I think we made the right choice then, and we should make the right choice now. No compromises on basic human rights.”
