District Records: Volume One

District Records

Washington DC’s District Records is the brainchild of Los Hermanos Rodriguez bassist Dave Ridgeway. It is an independent label showcasing the best of the city’s diverse musical landscape. In an effort to focus attention on a city more known for politics than music, Ridgeway has put together this compilation featuring some of DC’s best-known underground bands.

Running the gamut from the upbeat melodies of Circle 9’s “Here We Go” to the explosive garage rock of The Nuclear’s “Metro Meltdown” and the ska/rock/funk of Judson Clinton’s “Tito’s Rule,” the compilation does a decent job of showcasing the talent. The quality level sometimes falters, but that’s to be expected on a compilation such as this. Still it is refreshing to hear some genuinely interesting new music from a place not traditionally established as a hotbed for new music.
