Beth Thornley has a friendly, folksy country sound that vaguely sounds like any number of other singer songwriters. There’s a Natalie Merchant resonance in her voice, a plaintive quality I associate with Jane Wiedlin, and an arranging style that sounds like Wheatus on a good day. The tender songs of love lost and found could come from Girlyman, and her backing band would fit in any pro studio in the world. I’ve spun this disc three times now, and I still like the opening number “Stand” best of all. It’s a bit hard to decipher but feels like a love split in half by inaction on both sides. Further songs carry the theme, and if Ms. Thornley hasn’t suffered for love, she makes a darn good show of it.
