Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs

Live, Fall 2010

Sony Music

To say Ray LaMontagne can sing is sorta like saying Babe Ruth could swing a bat. These five cuts, largely from his 2010 release God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise and 2008’s Gossip in the Grain, showcase the weary-voiced troubadour and serve as an excellent introduction to his rockin’ country/ folk/ Americana sound for those late to the party. He hit with a splash in 2004 with Trouble and quickly became a favorite of the Starbucks set, but he’s certainly more than that. He reminds you at times of an American Van Morrison, or perhaps a bit of Gomez’s Ben Ottewell, but he’s his own voice. Take a listen to “You Can Bring Me Flowers” with the great Larry Campbell on fiddle – it sounds like a lost cut from the International Submarine Band. If you don’ t know who that is, well, I bet LaMontagne does. Stellar stuff.
