Fairy Tale Courtroom

Fairy Tale Courtroom

By Dana Proulx

Directed by Wade Hair

Starring Larry Stallings, John Kelley and Tabitha Rox

Breakthrough Theater, Winter Park FL</strong>

Children’s plays have their charms, and it’s usually the kids in cute costumes and rarely the script. Tonight we explore two courtroom capers; in act one it’s the Big Bad Wolf (Andrew) in the docket for attacking Little Red Riding Hood (Nikole Torres), and later we examine The Wicked Witch (Angela Cotto) for attacking everyone else in Fairyland. Presiding is Judge Larry Stallings; his big shtick creates new ways to settle bench disputes between the legal teams. Rock Paper Scissors seems as fair as anything else. Tabitha Rox plays the tall, dour DA; she never wins a hand of RPS but she prevails in more important ways; she’s the closet thing on this stage to adult supervision. John Kelly is the guy with the worst gig, he wears a jester’s outfit that looks like it’s a size to small. Poor John…I’ve seen this man play Shakespeare.

Smaller people populate the witness box; Tyler Kreush took a very Bart Simpson approach to the Flying Monkey role, Kevin Mercer did a very floppy scare crow, and Ashlee Rose Degelleke nailed Snow White. But by far my favorite character on stage was Angela Cotto’s nose wart; this was hands down the best stage prosthetic ever and I hope we see it again soon. Were there laughs? Of course; with all these people and costumes something will make you giggle; but don’t expect Perry Mason here. But if there’s a matinee, bring any small children you can; they will love it.
