Earlier this year, Phoebe Rings, a dream pop band, wiped their previous recordings from the internet. Now, they are returning with a polished re-release of their self-titled debut EP, via Carpark Records.

The New Zealand-based quartet, led by the multi-talented Crystal Choi, features members from the country’s indie royalty — including Alex Freer of Tiny Ruins and Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent of Princess Chelsea. Phoebe Rings is an indie supergroup in every sense, but one that forges its own path with an eclectic blend of influences.
Crystal Choi’s departure from her jazz roots might be the best decision she’s ever made. “I got very sick of jazz,” she admits, a sentiment that seems to echo through the colorful, ethereal soundscapes of Phoebe Rings. In their world, jazz’s improvisational spontaneity meets the lush, dreamy textures of Stereolab and the cinematic whimsy of Studio Ghibli. The result is music that feels both intricately crafted and refreshingly spontaneous — a perfect balance of Choi’s past and her vision for the future.
Originally recorded and mixed during lockdowns by the band along with Tom Healy, Jonathan Pearce, and Bob Frisbee, this EP first appeared in 2021. The re-release showcases an even richer, more sumptuous sound, thanks to Pearce’s expert production (known for his work with The Beths) and added strings from violinist Charmian Keay and cellist Kathleen Tomacruz. The band describes the six tracks as a “love letter” to their eclectic influences, which range from Studio Ghibli films and soundtracks like Zelda and Stardew Valley to old-school Bossa Nova, French avant-pop group Stereolab, and romantic ‘90s Korean ballads.
This EP offers an elegant sound that’s kaleidoscopic, reflective, and often magical—perfectly capturing the identity of Phoebe Rings! in a good manner. This is an EP that’s not just a collection of songs, but a carefully woven tapestry of sound and emotion.
