The Lacking Details 018
Lord Nap / The Mommyheads / Vundabar / more…
by Julius C. Lacking
GREETINGS!
Welcome to the official reboot of The Lacking Details, a somewhat regular accounting of radio activities and other pursuits pertaining to your host, Julius C. Lacking. If this is your first time receiving this newsletter, you are most likely someone who has sent me an email pitching an artist for radio airplay or for coverage on ink19.com. This input stream is then haphazardly dissected and analyzed then distilled into the essence making up this missive.
This periodical will contain brief reviews of newish releases that perk up my ears, links to radio playlists and online streams accounting for my broadcast activities, and other odds and ends that I’d like to call to your notice. Time is precious, and attention is slipperier than water, so I try to be brief.
As always, your comments, feedback and requests are welcome!

DETAILS

Lord Nap
A Royal Disaster
Nap Records
By spinning the dial on ’70s AM radio and sticking with the conceit to the very end, this is an exciting, terrifying, but ultimately refreshing carnival ride. Careful with falling down the rabbit hole with this immensely productive artist.
RIYL: Ween, Steely Dan, The Boneless Children Foundation
Released February 14, 2025
••

Vundabar
Surgery and Pleasure
Loma Vista Recordings
These Boston kids with a New York attitude don’t have time for your little dance on the street, you better keep your eyes on where you’re going. It’s all an act, because under the gritty glitter and trash talk is a heart that beats warm and true.
RIYL: Parquet Courts, The Smiths, The French Kicks
Released March 7, 2025
••

The Mommyheads
One Eyed Band
Mommyhead Music
With incisive lyrics intertwined with unexpected arrangements, the band is in fine form, serving as a bittersweet soundtrack for changing weather, complementing both the sunshine and the rain but especially the part where one changes into the other.
RIYL: Papas Fritas, Modest Mouse, Michael Penn
Released November 9, 2024
••

Divorce
Drive to Goldenhammer
Gravity Records / Capitol Records UK
The name implies something ponderous, onerous, heavy, and while you can find some flashes of that in here, it’s more of a showcase for the kind of indie rock that shines brightly with male-female harmonies and sentiments that will twist your guts.
RIYL: The Shins, Tele Novella, Mates of State
Released March 7, 2025
••

Des Demonas
Apocalyptic Boom! Boom!
In The Red
You can capture my attention immediately by kicking off your album with an overdriven organ riff and a disaffected voice. Blending danceable R+B aspects with a punk attitude, this DC band is retro and fast-forward and what we need in these times,
RIYL: The Mooney Suzuki, Kid Congo Powers, Killing Joke
Released November 29, 2024
••
MIXTAPE 286

The Traveller
We can’t say which alternate timeline Art D’Ecco came from, but we are grateful and hope they don’t miss them too dearly.
In this episode: Art d’Ecco, Bow Wow Wow, David Garza, Dr. Dog, Fleetwood Mac, Holly Miranda, Inspiral Carpets, Kim Deal, Matt Berry, Planet Parlor, Portishead, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Starlight Mints, Tame Impala, Violent Femmes

BROADCASTS

What Do I Know
Tue. March 11, 2025 9pm – 12am (KAFM Grand Junction)
Deep Sea Diver crashes into the scene with ballasted boots on their latest release, and I have to give Trevor a tip of the hat for sharing their video on social media. Elsewhere! My attempts at self promotion are growing only slightly less awkward, but I hope the listeners are getting the message.

OUTBOUND
Languages are so different and alike from each other, and nowhere is this more evident than on Onomatopoeia Odyssey which explores how each language standardizes the sound an animal makes, from the fairly agreed-upon “meow” to the hotly-disputed “oink.” ◼
