With his newest long player, Mood 4 Love, Bay Area rapper, producer, and imaginative creator Chow Mane delves into leitmotifs of love, heartache, and nostalgia.
Chow Mane’s sound blends aspects of indie-pop, hip-hop, and West Coast rap, highlighted by his subtle yet evocative rasping-lite vocals riding over guitars, synth pads, and throbbing percussion.
Inspired by Wong Kar Wai’s 2000 romantic drama, In The Mood For Love, Chow Mane captures the film’s wistful, melancholic appeal into soundscapes draped in passion, desire, and the rapture of blossoming love. At times sweet, at other times brooding, the album captures the ebbing and rising essence of romance in today’s world.
Often referred to as a “master chef of sound,” Chow Mane’s music merges genres effortlessly, ranging from impish playfulness to charming melodicism full of thoughtful lyrics, helping to establish the musician as one of hip-hop’s most innovative artists.
Mood 4 Love encompasses a baker’s dozen tracks. Of the 13 tracks, entry points include the opener, “Banana Bay,” featuring a low-slung hip-hop melody atop a lightly thumping kick drum. There’s a delicious, teasing tenderness about Chow Mane’s vocals, imbuing the lyrics with carefree, romantic adventure.
A personal favorite because of its creamy, shimmering harmonics, “Spend Some Time” puts Chow Mane’s silky flow on display, creating a stylish, layered tune with beckoning surfaces.
Another favorite because of a gleaming, swaying melody, “Try Again” radiates the remnants of deep emotions for a former lover, and, perhaps, the possibility of reconnecting. While “Salad Days” reflects on the past, a time of innocence, youth, and simplicity. Arrayed in nostalgia, the song exudes the sensation of halcyon moments.
Rolling out on a soft, sparkling intro, “Little Bit Crazy” narrates the feelings induced by infatuation, affirming the idea that love can make us wacky. Chow Mane’s vocals disclose delight and contentment with his zany response to the buzz of emotions.
A bit sad, but utterly alluring, “WOES IN THE 510” glides forth on crisp, shushing percussion as Chow Mane’s vocals invest the lyrics with sentimental reflections conjured up by heartbreak. No matter how he tries to quell his ardor, the feelings won’t subside.
Mood 4 Love showcases Chow Mane’s topnotch, complex vocal flows and innate gift for crafting irresistible hip-hop.
