Kittyhawk

Tin Foil Hat is a song for our times. It’s a jangly pop tune about ideology-crossed lovers. The protagonist has fallen for a girl who is a “walking talking Murphy’s Law.” Dave sings that “She believes the earth is flat / I don’t know what to say about that / She’s as crazy as an outhouse rat / but she looks real cute in her tin foil hat.” The point of the song is we can get along with people with wild ideas if we try. I don’t know about you,, but I know a few people like Dave’s love interest.

I’d recommend the Kittyhawk EP just for “Tin Foil Hat,” but the rest of the songs are good, if not as funny. “Wild and Willing” is a sun drenched love song powered by pedal steel guitar. I also like “Someone Worth Waiting For.” It has a Springsteenesque everyman-stuck-in-a-dead-end-life hero. The poor guy is playing the same games down at the pool hall hoping to find Miss Right. Considering the reasons he gives for rejecting past loves, (“Missy never got my jokes. Kathy had one tat too many… Danni slept with my kid brother”) he may be waiting a long, long time.

“Pretty Soon It’ll Be Too Late” closes the EP with a song about “a full grown man with teenage dreams.” Goddess himself could be the “analog man in a digital age” still chasing rock and roll dreams when others say it’s too late. Here’s to those who never say never.
