Singer-songwriter and producer Frankie Muriel releases his latest single, “Those Were The Nights,” the first track lifted from his debut solo album, I’m Still Standing, coming out in August.
Muriel began his career in St. Louis, playing with Broken Toyz, followed by almost instant success with KINGOFTHEHILL, signing with a major label, airplay on MTV, and charting on Billboard. With the advent of grunge, Muriel evolved, performing as the frontman of Dr. Zhivegas.
About “Those Were The Nights,” Muriel says, “It’s my love letter to those wild and free days of our youth. It’s a tribute to the fans who launched my career, letting me live my dream. It’s also a nod to my old bandmates and those times in our lives when all you had to do was believe in order to make anything possible!”
“Those Were The Nights” rolls out on a simple yet deliciously evocative intro made up of piano accents, percussion, and bluesy gospel-like vocals. There’s a wistful depth, at once intimately revealing and soaring, with a joie de vivre that encompasses the past and the future.
“Our dreams were big / And our hearts were free / We had nothing to lose / And the world to see / Whoa oh those were the days.”
Brimming with ‘80s and ‘90s-beholden resonance and weight, “Those Were The Nights” echoes the unforgettable exhilaration of life.
Muriel’s album, I’m Still Standing, ranges across motifs of love, loss, and lessons learned, while displaying Muriel’s gift for writing songs that appeal to listeners of any age.
Muriel explains, “I’m young enough to look forward, yet old enough to start looking back. ‘Those Were The Nights’ came out of that reflection. I want to celebrate what was — and what still can be.”
