Singer-songwriter Eva James won the Gloucester 400th Anniversary Singer-Songwriter Challenge in 2023, followed by going to New York to lay down tracks for her debut album, Earth To Eva, produced by Grammy-winner Paula Cole. As soon as she finished recording, she suffered physical failure. Bedridden for six months, she didn’t know if she’d ever sing or record or perform again. Like the mythical phoenix, James arose from the ashes, revealing her “true self” in the process.
“This record nearly didn’t happen,” says James. “I recorded it right before everything collapsed — and then finishing it saved my life.”

Embracing 11 tracks, high points on Earth To Eva include the opening track, “You’re The Worst,” which travels on a low-slung dark piano riding a pulsating rhythm. James’ vocals shift between dreamy tones and potent, muscular timbres, expressing shades of emotion.
A personal favorite because of its gorgeously elegant intro, “Invincible” hums with raw, emotional echoes of inner resilience engendered through an understanding of personal vulnerability. Suffused with delicate colors, James’s voice unveils an undercurrent of steeliness, resolve born of recognition and acceptance.
Another favorite because of its lighter pop feel, “Blue Dreams” travels on a piano-driven melody supported by a luscious, syncopated rhythm. James’s vocals bare a charming, wistful longing for all life has to offer.
“Sober” finds James lacing her voice with haunting, shadowy tones, evoking moody, almost elegiac, hues. There’s a swaying, irresistible motion to her vocal flow, at once sumptuous and melancholic.
Perhaps the best track on the album, “Til We Meet Again” straddles the sensation between floating and gliding, as James’s expressive vocals articulate the gut-wrenching, primordial experience of loneliness.
Awash in memorable dark pop surfaces and Eva James’s sorceress voice, Earth To Eva transforms the ache of anguish into significance.
