Contagious So-Cal Combo Infects Indie Rock Scene

There we were, just last week, just the two of us, me and my Golden Retriever buddy, lounging on the sofa. I’d come over to dog-sit for a friend, as her Florida beach house was undergoing a major plumbing overhaul that morning while she was at work. A very capable multitasker, I was surfing an endless sea of current vomit rock videos on YouTube while simultaneously entertaining my friend’s lovable pooch. Suddenly, the craziest, most unimaginable thing happened: a video popped up randomly on the massive screen — and it didn’t blow donkeys. Yeah, totally crazy, right? The band was Mewtone. The video was for the song, “See You Tonight.” And lickety-split, my zest for living was restored.

Truth be told, whenever I discover a really exciting new band, I tend to clamp down on it like a pit bull to a pork chop, refusing to turn loose. Hence, in bona fide creepy, stalker-like fashion, I began Googling the snot out of the indie So-Cal combo until my pocket iGadget (nearly) began smoking. And the payoff was well worth the effort.

A classic case of connecting through somebody, who knew somebody, who knew somebody, Mewtone finally came together as a band in late 2024, playing covers under their quirky name, inspired by the Pokémon character, Mew. And in 2025, the rubber met the road when the four-piece troupe began writing, recording, releasing, and performing their own original material. Stylistically, Mewtone blends wide-eyed ’80s innocence with fuzzy-buzzy ’90s riffs, dripping with the fresh-squeezed appeal of artists who came of age during the new millennium.

Recorded and produced by drummer Shan Kam in his own home studio, the band’s two contagious singles, “See You Tonight” and “TV Screen,” prove that a great band is about more than style and vibe. In fact, it’s all about songs. Written by co-guitarist and vocalist Sierra Gaynor, both of these girl-next-door-falls-for-the-boy-‘round-the-way tracks are 100% fat-free charmers. Clocking in at just two minutes and change, they each zing with intoxicating vocals, crazy-glued to Devyn Renee’s rock-ribbed bass lines and the melodic guitar work of Matt Fielis.

As for the “See You Tonight” video that pummeled me in the first place, the oft-viewed YouTube clip is simply irresistible. The video beautifully captures a young band doing what a young band should be doing, having fun while the members still like each other: rehearsing and recording, hanging out and shooting hoops, scarfing down pizza and lapping up ice cream, and even slurping on occasional Big Gulps, together. It may seem all “Very Brady”-like, but for this band, that branding is brilliant!

In sum, Mewtone is positively one of the best and brightest rock bands to pop onto my radar in a very long time. And if they can keep their eyes on the track, avoid colliding into guardrails, and continue writing great songs, with their proper EP rolling out in 2026, this band could blast past the checkered flag!
