Don Broco
Nightmare Tripping
Fearless Records
Those British bruisers, those fun-loving foreigners, those raucous renegades return this spring season with their first full-length studio slab since Amazing Things back in 2021. And with Nightmare Tripping, Don Broco successfully recreates a splendid sonic assault reminiscent of their celebrated 2018 set, Technology.
Truth be told, for purists paying attention, there’s not a super-surprise factor here, as most of the record has been sliced up and served out in the form of “teaser” videos for nearly a year. However, the payoff remains massive. Hence, it’s fully worthy of a lil’ extra oohing and cooing.
Driven by the signature crunch of guitarist Simon Delaney and the cherub-like vocals of frontman Rob Damiani, the colossal 11-track collection is pumped to perfection by the defibrillator-style rhythm section of ever-dapper drummer Matt Donnelly and shameless swashbuckling bassist Tom Doyle.
While there’s certainly no shortage of highlights, Nightmare Tripping does own a few particularly tall standouts, including the powerhouse leadoff video / single “Cellophane” and the surprisingly legit, unholy union with Nickelback on the title track. However, it could be debated that it’s “True Believers,” the nut-busting collab with longtime Architects frontman Sam Carter, that packs the record’s most brutal punch.
In sum, Nightmare Tripping is a doozie indeed, and arguably well worth the five-year wait. Dig, if you will. #ThatsNotTom
