Clever clever, Mr. Bird
The Incredibles does not have the heart of The Iron Giant or Finding Nemo, but nor do I think it was trying to. You don’t criticize an issue of The Fantastic Four or a James Bond movie for having insufficent heart, you ask was it thrilling? Was it funny? Was it fun? The Incredibles is all three, and that’s more than a worthy trade-off.
I shouldn’t make you think the film is heartless–you do care about the characters. But heart is not as much of what The Incredibles is about as it was those earler Bird/Pixar classics. It’s an adventure movie for familes, and very much a raising of the mask to Fantastic Four (and other super hero) comics and James Bond movies.
Plus it’s got a villian who looks like a cross between Conan O’Brien and the Heat Miser. How much can you lose?
PS: And has been pointed out by cartoon fans, Pixar and director Brad Bird have licked the CGI humans problem.
