GREETINGS!

My apologies if you got two copies of the previous newsletter; I am still getting used to this new software.Spring is in the air, and the post-holiday dry spell for new releases has officially broken, with more music than yours truly could possibly absorb in the span of a single newsletter. Looking at upcoming releases, it’s not likely to slow down soon and will be impossible to keep up with, always something I look forward to. On the downside, I’m still discovering new releases from 2017.Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the last couple of issues. As always, the door to my inbox is always open, just reply.

DETAILS

Drop Nineteens

1991

Wharf Cat Records

The year 1991 was when we heard the echoes of Loveless as the recorded work of the many bands it inspired hit the shelves in a shimmering gauzy implacable tsunami of guitar wails, only to be crushed by the mud-encrusted tank treads of grunge.

RIYL: Swervedriver, Curve, Full Body II

Released February 7, 2025

Listen on Spotify

Andy Bell

pinball wanderer

Sonic Cathedral

Absorbing the dubbiest elements of the classic Manchester grooves of the late ’80s, this Welsh musician makes the timespan contained within feel like the blink of an eye, even with an 8+ minute banger in 7/4 in the middle of it all.

RIYL: Ride, The Stone Roses, Fela Kuti

Released February 28, 2025

Listen on Spotify

••

Youth Lagoon

Rarely Do I Dream

Fat Possum

It’s somehow light and airy, yet moody and brooding, and though it should be easy to find the half-whispered croon of the vocals creepy, it’s just the sound of someone taking you in confidence as they lead you into the deep, dark forest.

RIYL: Mother Mother, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, CocoRosie

Released February 21, 2025

Listen on Spotify

••

Fat Freddy’s Drop

SLO MO

The Drop

Does this Fat Freddy have anything to do with Shelton’s Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers? Intentional or not, these compositions mixing reggae, funk, soul, dub, and other cannabis-friendly genres are a good way to spend an unproductive afternoon.

RIYL: Mungo’s Hi Fi, Antibalas, Rocket Juice + The Moon

Released November 8, 2024

Listen on Spotify

••

Snapped Ankles

Hard Times Furious Dancing

The Leaf Label

Electropunk seems to be a fitting soundtrack as the timeline veers towards A Clockwork Orange. As the riot rages on, the line between repetition and riff is trodden on until it’s no longer visible, and the crowd surge begins to resemble a dance.

RIYL: Brainiac, Neu, Escape-ism

Released March 28, 2025

Listen on Spotify

BROADCASTS

Blitzkrieg Bop

Tue. March 25, 2025 9pm – 12am (KAFM Grand Junction)

The weather is rushing up on us, and this mercurial ambiance fits tonight’s opening cover from Yo La Tengo, as they take a blistering Ramones classic and turn it into a bit of beach blanket bingo. Respect was paid later in the show with the original “Rockaway Beach,” which sure sounds like a fun place.
