Babe Rainbow
Slipper imp and shakaerator
p(doom)
Swimming out from the multicolor wave of Australian psychedelia that’s been lapping our shores for the past decade, this trio has revealed itself to be a quality addition to any activity that might involve sunshine and the words “relax” or “enjoy.”
The album welcomes you to its peculiar ashram with “What is ashwagandha,” presenting a question that perhaps the following songs might answer. Or not. The band tries out several resplendent outfits through this near-dozen tracks, from the laid-back vibes of “Sunday” and “Mt dub” (the latter with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Stu Mackenzie) to the more energetic pace of “Aquarium cowgirl” or the iridescent disco groove of “Like cleopatra.”
Throughout it all, things never rise to the level I’d describe as “frantic,” though “When the milk flows” is charged enough to serve as the soundtrack to a car chase. Vocals are gently floating in the mix, and the discernible lyrics are elliptical and suggestive. Spring is in the air, and this should be playing as you open the windows for the first time in months.
