Occasionally, the algorithm god can be our friend. Based on my constant, consistent Interweb searches, some really amazing music has found me in 2025. Possibly the best and brightest record to come my way this year is Wrap Me Up In Colored Feathers, the just-released third studio offering from New Jersey-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Erika Sherger.
Truth be told, I didn’t receive this record through a PR rep. The irresistible teasers I spotted online compelled me to buy an entire digital copy, with my very own allowance money. And it was worth every penny! Pouring a near-lethal dose of Maniacs-breathed charm into a seemingly Parsons-inspired soul, this ten-track bruiser pummeled me, posthaste. Now, I can’t shut up about it.
Though she wrote songs privately for years, it wasn’t until 2018 that Sherger stepped out publicly, honing her skills at local open-mic nights, and then sharing her massive talent with the world. Her debut record, Like Birds, dropped in 2021, followed by her sophomore set, Bad Wolf, in 2023.
A master storyteller, Sherger’s songs are deeply personal, exploring heartache and anguish, healing and transformation, with Morissette-style transparency. In the record’s moving opener, “This Alive,” Sherger reveals a personal, post-relationship perspective: “I woke up on the bright side. Alone, but otherwise. Left him back on the dark side. I don’t miss him, I don’t mind.”
Produced to absolute perfection by Damian Calcagne at his famed New Jersey PineBox Studio, the spectacular 10-track collection is a smorgasbord of aural temptations. The leadoff video / single “Parkway Queen” is an alluring cozy, and “Change” boasts a Let it Bleed vibe, while “July” is fueled by Bonnie Raitt-caliber roadhouse allure.
In sum, as a result of bathing in Wrap Me Up In Colored Feathers, Erika Sherger has splooged me with splendor. And I don’t even wanna towel off. But I could use a smoke!
