Inuktitut (Remixes)

Bonsounds

Inuktitut was Elisapie’s album reinterpreting songs of her youth into her native language. The Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter rearranged and reinterpreted classic rock tracks by Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Queen, and Pink Floyd for an imaginary radio station in Nunavut. The album is part of Elisapie’s ongoing quest to protect and promote Inuktitut as a living language in the arctic, where she is from.

Inuktitut (Remixes) is a brand extension on the original idea. The original tracks were dreamy, indie rock interpretations, and the new EP takes three of these songs to the dance floor. The remixes by Hologramme give the tracks an ambient house spin. Fleetwood Mac’s “Sinnatumait (Dreams)” retains the dreamy quality of the album track while injecting loping dance beats and synth squiggles. “Uummati Attanarsimat (Heart of Glass)” is a good choice for a dance mix — the original Blondie version was a new wave/disco crossover, after all. Queen’s “Qimatsilunga (I Want to Be Free)“ is propelled by dance beats, which accent Elisapie’s vocals.

The remixes are pleasant experiments with what can be done to make old songs new. Still, I prefer the original takes on the Inuktitut album. These remixes are just a bonus treat for the dance-floor crowd.
