The Things That I See

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of his 2015 album, Compromised, singer-songwriter Steve Forbert releases a remixed and remastered collection of the album, now entitled The Things That I See.

The Things That I See comprises 11 Forbert originals along with a cover of “Send In The Clowns.” A new Forbert song, “Ebenezer’s Back In Town,” will appear on the CD as a bonus track, and The Things That I See will be available on vinyl.

According to Forbert, “I have always felt proud of these songs, remixing the recordings and adding a few touches was in order.”

Encompassing a baker’s dozen tracks, entry points on The Things That I See include the title track, an Eagles-like song featuring Forbert’s slightly raspy vocals riding over shimmering, almost jangly guitars and a gorgeous piano. A soft, wailing harmonica adds a delicious swaying flavor.

A personal favorite because of its potent melody and Forbert’s wonderfully gravelly vocals, vaguely reminiscent of John Hiatt, “Drink Red Wine” projects a delightfully loose feel, a bit raw and thrown together. The distant aspect of the harmonica on the outro provides a grand touch of wistfulness.

Another favorite, “Rollin’ Home To Someone You Love” travels on a swaggering, bluesy rhythm that leans to dark colors, yet there’s a luscious motion to the melody, at once alluring and elusively voluptuous.

Forbert’s cover of “Send In The Clowns” reveals an almost bouncy, mid-tempo rhythm as well as a syncopated beat, forging a remarkable reimagination of the song.

For some reason, “I Don’t Know If You Know It” summons up suggestions of Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” Forbert’s marvelously scruffy voice imbues the lyrics with aching longing and a sense of wonder at his own emotions.

The stellar “Devil (Here She Comes Now)” conjures up memories of Elvis, Roy Orbison, and the Eagles. There’s a delectable swing to the melody, making it one of the best tracks on the album.

“Ebenezer’s Back In Town” closes the album with an exploration of the status quo, like Mickey Newbury’s “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In).” Simultaneously bluesy and sensual, the flow of the tune glides, slides, and leans on affecting, tasty surfaces.

Embellished with Steve Forbert’s satisfying scratchy voice, The Things That I See dilates time and crafts moments of intimacy,

Steve Forbert
